This project required translating the visual identity of a selected nationality into a rigorously constrained, rotation‑driven tripod table composed of five interlocking components. A CNC‑cut plywood top, two neon‑orange 3D‑printed connectors, a lathe‑turned spindle derived from Illustrator templates, and three legs shaped from a single plank using the Shaper Origin each imposed distinct limits on geometry, material behavior, and assembly. With no metal fasteners permitted and every part dependent on precise axial symmetry, the design demanded careful coordination between cultural reference, rotational form, and the realities of contemporary fabrication tools.

My response to these constraints was to develop a table that expressed German visual identity through controlled curvature, balanced proportion, and a clear rotational hierarchy. The spindle became the central gesture, shaped from Illustrator templates and refined on the lathe until its profile felt both culturally grounded and structurally even. The legs were cut from a single plank using the Shaper Origin and tapered to reinforce the table’s axial symmetry without adding unnecessary ornament. For the 3D‑printed components, I kept the top connector minimal and designed the bottom connector around a hidden vertical dowel system that allowed the legs to lock in securely without metal fasteners. The fixed neon orange filament was treated as a deliberate contemporary accent, and the final paint choices were pulled from German palettes in a way that supported the form rather than competing with it. The result is a cohesive, rotation‑driven interpretation of nationality that works cleanly within the project’s fabrication limits.

This project began with a simple but demanding prompt: create a tripod table that expresses the visual identity of a chosen nationality while staying fully committed to rotational symmetry and a strict five‑part construction system. I chose Germany early on, mostly because I was drawn to the balance of sturdiness, quiet ornamentation, and nature‑inspired structure that shows up across German furniture and Black Forest woodwork. I wanted the table to feel grounded and culturally specific without relying on literal motifs, and I wanted the form itself to carry the identity rather than any decorative layer placed on top. That meant treating each component as part of a shared rotational language and letting the geometry do most of the communication.

The spindle became the anchor for that language. I developed its profile in Illustrator, pulling from botanical silhouettes and structured curves that felt aligned with the German references I was studying. Turning it on the lathe was a process of refining those curves until they felt balanced and intentional. The final form is continuous and calm, neither overly ornate nor overly minimal, which is exactly the balance I was aiming for. The legs followed the same logic. They were cut from a single plank using the Shaper Origin, and I shaped them with a gentle inward taper that reinforces the table’s axial identity. Their curvature gives the table a grounded stance without making it feel heavy. The only unexpected moment in fabrication came from the Shaper itself. A few burn marks were too deep to sand out without distorting the profile, but they ended up reading like natural knots or darkened grain, which made the legs feel more organic and less manufactured.

The connectors required a different kind of thinking. The top connector stayed intentionally simple so it could act as a clean transition between the spindle and the tabletop. The bottom connector was more complex. I needed a way to lock in three legs securely without metal fasteners, and I wanted the exterior form to stay quiet so the wood elements could remain the focus. I designed a vertical dowel system hidden inside the printed part, which allowed the legs to slot in with surprising strength while keeping the outside geometry compact and unobtrusive. The neon orange filament was a fixed constraint, so I treated it as a contemporary accent rather than something to disguise. The color became part of the visual system instead of a distraction.

The tabletop was the final piece to resolve. I wanted it to carry the same level of intricacy as the rest of the table without overwhelming the form, so I looked at game tables like chess and checkers for inspiration. Their patterns have a structured rhythm that felt compatible with the German references I was working from. I designed a routed pattern that adds detail without becoming decorative for its own sake. The scalloped perimeter reinforces the rotational identity of the table, and the filleted edges soften the geometry and make the top more comfortable to interact with. I finished it with a clear coat to keep the wood natural, which kept the color strategy consistent across the entire piece.

The final step was color. I wanted the printed connectors to feel integrated with the wood rather than isolated, so I created a gradient that transitions from natural wood to the neon orange filament. I matched the orange as closely as possible and applied the gradient by suspending the spindle and legs and rotating them while spraying. The result is subtle but effective. It ties the components together without competing with the form, and it lets the geometry remain the primary expression of the nationality. In the end, the table feels cohesive and intentional. It reflects German visual identity through proportion, curvature, and structure, and it works cleanly within the constraints of CNC machining, lathe turning, 3D printing, and rotational design.

Early ideation sketches where I explored how curvature, proportion, and ornamental cues could translate into a German‑inspired spindle and leg system. This stage was about testing visual languages before committing to any specific cultural direction.

Refined ideation sketches where I began locking in the spindle, leg, and top‑connector geometry. This was the point where the visual language started to feel distinctly German, and the proportions became stable enough to guide the final modeling.

Orthographic studies used to work out the angles and mechanics of the three‑dowel system. These messy but essential drawings helped me understand how the legs would lock into the bottom connector and guided the final 3D‑printed geometry.
